Today we had a fabulous first day of school! It was a challenge sitting in the heat but students worked hard an persevered. We learned a lot today about routines and expectations. Students also labeled all their materials and got organized, which, though tedious, was well worth it! :)
Tomorrow we'll continue to get to know one another, learn routines, and explore our classroom. Students will learn the procedures for checking a book out of my classroom library, we'll practice a fire drill, and we'll review where all of our materials are kept. We'll continue to read character education books, begin to take baseline tests to get an idea what skills we need to work on (these don't count towards grade), and we'll work on our goals for the year.
One of the highlights of the day was when Ms. Brandley bought us popsicles which we ate at the end of the day. Before we had these treats we talked about how in third grade "You get what you get and you don't get upset". We discussed how it's important to be grateful for gifts from others and even if we don't get exactly what we want, it's better than nothing, and we should be appreciative of the thought that went into the gift. Students even pointed out that at other schools kids probably didn't get popsicles, so they were lucky. I was proud no one complained or had a negative attitude about not getting the popsicle they wanted.
Just a reminder, third graders are rapidly growing, as are their appetites! Please check in that your child has enough food for the day. Also, if you turned in your lunch form late your child will not be able to get a hot lunch this week, or next week, so you will have to continue to send in a lunch. The school does not have extra lunch and I would hate to see any hungry children. I received 3 lunch forms today, one of which did not have a name on it. If you think this is from your child, please let me know so the food will go to them.
Many Thanks,
Mrs. Hockey
